Advocacy

Read Better Be Better is committed to ensuring that a high-quality education is accessible to all students, focusing on the importance of 3rd-grade literacy as a foundation for equity and social justice.

RBBB has prioritized the advocacy of 3 key strategies to achieve that goal:

  • K-3rd teachers are provided with opportunities for the mastery of pedagogy and, in particular, the science of learning to read.
  • Youth Leaders are supported on a pathway to the education profession, with an understanding of the importance of literacy on this journey.
  • Youth Leaders are empowered and encouraged to use their voices to advocate for themselves and their communities.

Pathway to Education Profession

Read Better Be Better’s (RBBB) after-school reading comprehension program offers High School students the unique opportunity and training to impact our education system by directly contributing to schools.

High School Program Assistants will work with students in Grades 6, 7, and 8 and 3rd graders. These Program Assistants support our Program Coaches by training middle school volunteers to implement a simple but highly-structured after-school program for 3rd graders. The middle school students work one-on-one with the younger students, modeling and fostering active engagement with various texts. The program also includes constructive play activities purposefully chosen for their ability to focus attention and improve concentration.  In addition, students may be able to shadow a 3rd-grade teacher at their site during the school day throughout the semester.
